Why a 4 Carat Diamond Ring Might Look Like a 2 Carat Diamond Ring

February 2nd, 2010

Shopping for jewelry, while a potentially enjoyable undertaking, can often be a confusing one too. Take the example of diamond, one of the most widely shopped for jewelry products, and which typically finds application on rings and watches. Now one thing people shopping for diamond rings often complain about is the fact that although the diamond rings are typically sold on the basis of their carat weight (so that a 4 carat diamond ring is expected to cost more than a 1 carat diamond ring, for instance), it is often very difficult to make sense of the carat measure and its implications on the size of the rock on the ring.

To sympathize with the sentiment that carat weight can add confusion (rather than clarity) to the jewelry shopping experience, it would help to appreciate that in many people’s estimation, the bigger the rock at the center of the ring, the more alluring and prestigious the said ring comes across to them. So as many people go shopping for jewelry (especially on online diamond shops where you cannot actually physically see the product being sold), their expectation when opting for something like a 4 carat diamond ring is that they will have a ring with a gigantic rock delivered to them. This often leads to bitter frustrations, when the said 4 carat diamond ring is ultimately delivered to them only for it to turn out to be a ring with more or less of an ordinary-sized rock at its center. This leads to a situation where the said people could be left feeling that they were sold a 2 carat ring in the name of a 4 carat ring – a situation that naturally lead to further bitterness because few things in life feel as bad as ‘being taken advantage of.’

So how does it come about that a 4 carat diamond ring can seem to be more or less equal to a 2 carat ring size-wise? Well, the answer to this question lies in appreciating the fact that carat measures a diamonds weight (the carat itself being about 200 milligrams – that is a fifth of a gram); and further appreciating the fact that the weight of anything does not always give us a full picture as to what the size of the said thing is.

So it follows that if what you are looking for is a ring with a huge rock at its center, then you need to look at more than carat weight in shopping for it if you are to avoid the situation where, for instance, you are left feeling that you have been sold a 2 carat ring in the name (and at the price) of a 4 carat diamond ring. Beyond the carat weight of the diamond, you need to also look at the diamond’s size in millimeters (which most vendors will tell you, if you ask them explicitly) and the diamond’s cut grade, both of which are the other factors that when looked in conjunction with the diamond’s carat weight, can give you insight as to what the size of the rock is.

Features that Set Cushion Cut Rings Aside

January 11th, 2010

Cushion cut rings are very popular among couples looking for either engagement rings or wedding rings. This is especially so for couples that are interested in the so-called vintage rings – seeing that the cushion cut is considered one such ‘vintage cut.’

There are a number of features that set the cushion cut rings aside from the pack.

First is their elegant simplicity. A properly done cushion cut ring ends up oozing plenty of the so-called ‘unpretentious beauty’ – something that, incidentally, men are usually very keen on as a quality in their lifetime (rather than one evening) partners.

The square and rectangular shapes that make up the cushion cut are alluring to many people – and are in fact part of the package that accounts for the simple elegance of cushion cut rings. Numerous repetitions of these squares and rectangles all over the oval shape of the ‘rock’ on the ring has the effect of making the whole thing look like an overly-filled up seat cushion: hence the name of the cut.

The long history of the cushion cut is another factor that makes cushion cut rings popular, among couples with a liking for things classic and antique. As it turns out, this is a cut whose history goes as far back as the industrial ages: with its popularity having boomed for the whole of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century: when the cushion cut was considered a contemporary cut.

Yet another factor setting aside cushion cut rings is their flexibility, in terms of styling. Granted, the cushion cut (like other vintage cuts), works best as a solitaire. Yet it can still come out reasonably well accented, so that the person opting for it doesn’t end up being constrained in terms of style.

Tacori Rings Explained

December 15th, 2009

Tacori rings, increasingly popular among people shopping for engagement and wedding rings, are made by a powerhouse in the jewellery industry going by the same name: Tacori.

Currently based in California, where Tacori rings are actually handcrafted, the history of the company behind them spans over the last forty years. Over that duration, Tacori rings have come to be viewed as the ultimate rings for people looking for beauty and exclusivity ‘in a package.’

Tacori prides itself of unparalleled workmanship, which comes out through its wide range of products.  Unlike other ring brands, which tend to be machine worked (and therefore lacking in emotion), Tacori rings are actually handcrafted, giving room for the artistry that goes into making them to manifest. Unlike the trend in other ‘fashion brands’ which have in recent years tended to outsource the manufacture of their wares to the so-called ‘eastern sweatshops’, Tacori rings are made right in the United States: in the sunny California.

The makers of Tacori rings don’t sell the rings to the users directly. Rather, they sell them through their network of authorized dealers, from where the users can get to purchase them. Over the years, Tacori has managed to establish a huge network of these dealers, so that wherever you are, you can be sure to quite easily locate someone dealing in Tacori rings if you go looking keenly enough. Tacori’s hesitation to sell their products directly, it would seem, is in a bid to avoid undercutting their distributors: which would inevitably be the result if they were to sell directly.

In addition to the Tacori rings, Tacori also makes other pieces of fine jewellery, including necklaces, earrings and bracelets. These too, according to Tacori, are hand-crafted, and sold through the company’s vast ‘authorized distributor and vendor network.’

Why Princess Cut Rings are So Popular

November 19th, 2009

For people shopping for gold and platinum engagement rings, the princess cut is one of the most popular.

This popularity of princess cut rings is attributable to a number of factors.

One of the reasons as to why princess cut engagement rings are so popular is the beauty of the princess cut. Truth be told, very few gold and platinum cuts can parallel the princess cuts’ beauty. Given that a woman wants nothing but the very best for her wedding, people preparing weddings have been known to go to great lengths to get very beautiful rings for the occasion, and more often than not (especially where gold and platinum are the chosen metals), the princess cut tends to be the chosen style.

Another reason as to why princess cut engagement rings are so popular is their ‘exclusivity.’  Truth be told, the princess cut does not tend to come very cheap, which is (paradoxically) a good thing in jewellery. The lowest priced of them tend to run into thousands of dollars. The net effect is that they tend to be beyond the reach of the ‘masses’ – but still affordable to the person who is ready to pay a little more for the ‘prestige.’ The fact that they don’t come exactly cheap, of course, means that they offer a way for a man to show his woman that he really cares for her (so much that he is ready to spend huge sums of money on her), to buy her an exclusive ring. This makes the princess cut wedding popular among people shopping for prestigious/exclusive rings, who happen to be in the majority, seeing that prestige is a valuable attribute in jewellery.

So in the final analysis, we have their beauty, and their ‘exclusivity’ (which is a function of their pricing), as the main factors behind the popularity of princess cut wedding rings.

Where to Find the Best Jewellery Rings

November 4th, 2009

At first sight, the topic on where to find the best jewelry engagement rings might seem odd, for the simple reason that in most people’s estimation, all rings are jewelry (so that the idea of  there being specialized items known as ‘jewelry rings’ could reasonably look odd).

The truth of the matter, strictly speaking, however is that not all rings qualify to be termed as jewelry rings. The only rings that are considered as jewelry rings (strictly speaking) are those that are made from precious stones like diamond, silver, gemstone and gold, so that the plainer rings – like those made from copper or aluminum cannot be considered to be jewellery rings under this way of thinking.

So having established the basic fact that jewellery rings are those made from the precious stones, we have a standing point from where we can proceed to answer the question as to where to actually find the best jewellery rings.

The answer to question as to where to find the best jewellery rings would be ‘in the stores affiliated to reputable and experienced jewelers.’ Now in this answer, we see two adjective components – ‘reputable’ and ‘experienced’ – that describe the places to find the best jewellery rings.

Taking the reputable part of the stores where you can find the best jewellery rings, we would have to point out that if there is one type of business where the reputation of the other party you are doing business with matters, then it has to be the business of jewelry. This is because authenticity is the first factor that we look at when considering jewellery, and that authenticity is very hard to find; and even where found, very hard to ascertain since genuine and fake items of jewellery look pretty much the same. Seeing that it is likely to be very hard to tell, just by the look of the them, which the genuine jewellery rings are likely to be and which ‘jewellery rings’ don’t make the genuineness test, it follows that it is only by ensuring that you get them from reputable sellers, the variety that is likely to have a reputation and a brand to protect, that you can get at least some level of assurance that you are actually getting genuine engagement rings.

Turning to the ‘experienced’ component of the answer to the question as to where to find the best jewellery rings, where we said that the stores run by ‘reputable and experienced’ vendors are the best such place, it would be worth pointing out that it is only experienced jewelers who are likely to be selling items that pass the other tests, beyond genuineness that go into determining what the ‘best’ jewellery rings are. These other factors include things like cut, style, carat size and so on, and these being extremely delicate things, it takes quite a bit of experience to get them just ‘right’ on the part of the jewellery makers.

The Three Stone Engagement Ring Explored

October 21st, 2009

The three stone engagement ring is often considered as being in a class of its own as far as engagement rings go, with most people who can get one seeing it as their first choice of an engagement ring.

In terms of symbolism, the three stones that make up the three stone engagement ring are seen as representing the three stages of a relationship (with the whole ring itself celebrating the second part of such a relationship), seeing that it is given at engagement time, after the first (acquaintance) stage of the relationship, and before the ultimate (marriage) stage of the romantic relationship. There are also those who see three stone engagement rings as being representative of the fact that the engagement stage – at which they are presented, is the stage at which the couple gets to reflect the past experiences, present state, and future outlook of their relationship, three stages that are represented by the three rocks on the ring.

Also called trinity rings because they are made of three stones, three stone rings also find widespread use in other occasions, besides engagement, examples of these other occasions celebrated with trilogy rings (as they also called) being the likes of anniversaries. Surprisingly though, trilogy/trinity rings are rarely used as wedding rings.

As the name suggests, it is the presence of three gems, arranged on a row on the front side of the ring that defines it as a three stone engagement ring. Of course, while it is the presence of these three stones on front of a ring that qualifies it to be considered a three stone ring, it is worth mentioning that the three stone engagement ring comes in a variety of styles, depending on the size of the stones employed on it, their shapes and their types.

Looking at the size of the stones employed, we may have one variety of the three stone engagement ring where all the three stones employed in making the ring are of one size, with another variety of the three stone engagement ring where the two outer stones are smaller than the middle stone of the ring (which symbolizes the present stage at which the relationship is), with the later variety being more common than the former variety where all the stones are of the same size.

With regard to the shapes of stones employed in making the three stone engagement ring, we have a huge variety, with the commonest shapes being circular and square. Other commonly employed stone shapes in the three stone engagement ring include emerald and marquise – though the square and circular shapes, because of their easy alignment, are to be more commonly found on the three stone engagement ring.

With regard to the types of stones employed in making the three stone engagement ring, we tend to find most rings of this variety having only one stone type all through (say three diamonds, three gemstones and so on) – though there are some ‘eccentric’ couples who may refer their three stone engagement ring to be made of three stones of different types, like say gold, diamond and gemstone, all on one ring.

Why So Many People are Spotting Right Hand Rings

October 13th, 2009

Once upon a time, rings were only supposed to be worn on the left hand ‘ring’ finger. It was generally a man who bought his woman a ring, so that the moment you set your eyes upon a woman wearing a right (on the left hand, of course), you automatically knew that she was someone else’s lady. The long and short of it is that rings were always worn on the ‘ring’ finger of the left hand, and that they were always bought by men for their women to signify that they were either married to them (in the case of wedding rings) or that they were about to marry them, in the case of engagement rings.

Fast forward to today, and we see more and more women spotting right hand fingers. The way it works is that a woman pops into a jewellery store (the online or brick and mortar variety), gets a quotation for a nice ring, buys it for a herself…and then starts wearing it on the ‘ring’ finger of her right hand, lest the meaning in the ring be misconstrued. So what could be behind this trend where more and more women are buying the right hand rings for themselves?

Well, behind the trend where right hand rings are becoming more and more popular is the ‘women’s liberalization’ wave, where women are coming to realize that they don’t have to live in desolation just because no ‘knight in shining armour’ came their way and gifted them with a ring…that they can just as well pop into a shop selling rings, buy themselves one, start wearing it on their right hands – and still feel as good as their counterparts who have been given the rings by their men. In other words, in the right hand rings, we find a message to the effect that a woman doesn’t necessarily need a man to be happy, and that a man (who would gift her with an ordinary left hand ring) would only be coming in to complete her happiness, but that she would already be happy on her own even before his entry into her life. Of course, someone might ask why the woman in this case then can’t wear her ring on her left hand then, and the answer to this question would be that she wears it on her right hand so that she doesn’t end up distracting and discouraging men who might have some sorts of intentions  about her. Such men, seeing her wearing an ordinary left hand ring, might get to imagine that she is either someone’s wife or fiancée, and thus keep his distance. This way, the women in question could very easily end up without a man in her life for the rest of her life; and clearly that is not the intention here.

Another factor that could account for the increased demand for right hand rings, besides the increased liberalization of women, is the fact that the wearing of the right hand rings by a number of celebrities and ‘opinion leaders’ in women’s circles has led many to start wearing the right hand rings, not because of the inner message in the rings, but rather just because they are the ‘in’ thing.

Expensive Diamond Rings – And Why They Cost What They Do

September 30th, 2009

Some diamond rings are expensive. Indeed, most diamond rings are expensive – and few people who have seen the price tags they tend to come at would argue with this fact. But why do they tend to cost that much?

Well, one reason the expensive diamond rings cost what they do is simply because the material they are made of, the said diamond, is not a cheap material. Pure diamond is one of the rarest materials (with only a few countries in the world naturally endowed with any quantities of it). Diamond is also one of the materials that are also extremely hard to extract –as the process of extracting diamond from the mines where it is found is a difficult and often dangerous one; and all these factors contribute to the high price tags the expensive diamond rings finally made out of it come at.

The rarity of the diamond is a particularly important factor here, keeping in mind that in basic economics, highly valued commodities that happen to get rare tend to have their prices rising, as the many people looking for them engage in price ways, bidding and counter-bidding, in an effort to be the ones who finally get them.
Of course, the difficulty involved in getting the diamonds is also an important factor in accounting as to why the expensive diamond  rings cost what they do, because the difficulty in producing the diamond naturally leads to raised production costs that are eventually passed on to the ultimate buyers of the product.  Incidentally, talking of the cost factors that go into the production of the expensive diamond rings, it is important to take note of the fact that the costly production does not end when the diamond has been processed into the rings, because even when the rings are in the hands of the ultimate vendors who sell them to wearers, they still have to be guarded very jealously (because robbers love them); thus raising their eventual cost even further.

Another factor as to why expensive diamond rings cost what they do is simply because they tend to belong to the class of goods that economists classify as ‘prestigious’ goods, goods that are bought simply for their prestige – and where the cost of the goods is one of the factors that goes into determining that ‘prestige.’ So here we end up with a situation where people are actually look to purchase the expensive diamond rings simply because they are expensive, and where they would actually not purchase them if their price were lowered!

Closely related to the ‘prestige factor’ in accounting as to why expensive diamond rings cost what they is the fact that they tend to be ‘big brand’ rings, rings that are marketed on the premise of their exclusivity. So here we end up with a situation where if their price was to fall, then every ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’ would be buying them, and they would therefore lose their exclusivity – effectively losing their value in the eyes of their buyers, who typically buy them in a bid to assert their ‘economic superiority’ over other less well endowed suitors, where the rings are being purchased for romantic expediency.

Why Cartier Engagement Rings Make the Ideal Choice

September 17th, 2009

Thinking of buying? or maybe you  just want to browse some amazing designs, if so read our blog page here … Where to buy diamond jewellery

If you considering taking your relationship with your loved one to the next level by getting engaged, then chances are that an engagement ring- the best way you can manage to get – is something you will also be looking for, to mark the occasion. And if you are keen on designer engagement rings, then Cartier engagement rings is probably one of the options you should really consider, if you are really keen on a designer engagement ring that really gets your loved one feeling that they are greatly appreciated. Cartier engagement rings make the ideal choice of an engagement ring for a number of reasons.

For one, genuine Cartier engagement rings are made of carefully selected diamonds; which is an important feature, given that diamond has (by tradition) always been considered the best material for engagement rings. This is in turn because it (diamond), being the strongest rock in the world, represents indestructible love for your beloved, the very kind of thing you would want to convey to your loved one at engagement; which in most cultures is the last step to marriage – a relationship which is supposed to be for eternity.

Now while there are indeed many other designer engagement rings that are made from pure diamond or what is flaunted as such, what sets Cartier engagement rings apart tends to be the fact that the diamonds employed in making the Cartier engagement rings tend to be carefully selected ones, typically blemish-free diamonds. Other features that are keenly accounted for in making Cartier engagement rings include symmetry and brilliance, with only the diamonds of perfect symmetry and brilliance being selected for making the Cartier engagement rings. Another important consideration that goes into the selection of diamonds for making Cartier engagement rings is carat size, and in this regard, the minimum carat acceptable for making the Cartier engagement rings is the measure known as .5 carat size. Cartier engagement rings are therefore, in many ways, just the perfect engagement rings for showing undying love to your prospective better half.

Another reason as to why Cartier engagement rings make the ideal choice of engagement rings is that they tend to come in all styles, so that whatever your dream in terms of engagement rings is, you are sure to find a Cartier engagement ring for you. Now this might not seem like too much of a feature to flaunt, unless you come to learn that most of the alternatives in terms of engagement rings to Cartier engagement rings tend to be very limited in terms of style availability, so that if you opt for them, you could very easily end up with an engagement ring style you (or your beloved) really won’t like, for lack of any better style. With Cartier engagement rings, on the other hand, regardless of whether your ideal engagement ring is the classic solitaire style, or a more varied style, you can be sure to find a Cartier engagement ring to match that preference in terms of style, if you go searching at the right places.
