Super Ideal Diamonds, diamonds for the connoisseur
The cut of a diamond is the key attribute that defines how much reflected light is returned. To look at it another way, if you were to point a light source at a transparent surface then most of the light would pass straight through with only a small amount returned, or reflected, back to the eye of the observer. But if the light source was pointed at a transparent prism then more of light would be reflected back from the facets or faces of the prism. For maximum light return the prism would have to be cut to very fine tolerances. As the diamond has similar attributed to a prism it behaves in the same way, thus how the diamond is cut will be fundamental to maximum the light return and hence the overall sparkle of a diamond.
Over many years of research and analysis techniques and methods have been established to measure the effective quality of the cut, one such technique is Hearts and Arrows. Hearts and Arrows is the pattern that is observed when looking at a diamond which has been cut to optimise its symmetry for returned light. However it is not quite as simple as viewing a pattern of hearts and arrows defines that a diamond has perfect symmetry, the quality of the hearts and arrows pattern defines the quality of the cut. In particular the heart pattern is the most difficult to achieve as each heart required perfect cutting of 8 facets of the diamond, if one or more is not cut in proportion the heart will be distorted.
For the casual observer they are not going to notice the Hearts and Arrows but they will notice how much a diamond sparkles. A diamond that has been cut to maximise the light returned will have the greatest sparkle. In an ideal world all diamonds would be cut to maximise the sparkle, however the reality of the commercial world is that the cut is often sacrificed to maximise diamond weight (carat) and thus the overall value that can be obtained from an original rough diamond stone.
So, if you are looking for the diamond with the ideal cut then you are very unlikely to find it in any high street jeweller, the main sources are specialist retailers such as Superidealdiamonds.co.uk. You will find samples of our current stock for super ideal cut diamonds for sale on this website, however if you do not find something that matches what you are looking for please let us know and we will find the one for you.
